The new ODM party leader's short break in Dubai follows a demanding period managing the party's transition and national political realignments, raising questions about the opposition's immediate strategic direction.

Newly-appointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga has taken a brief sabbatical, travelling to Dubai for what his family has described as a pre-planned break to rest and recharge. The move comes on Saturday, 22 November 2025, just over a week after he was formally ratified as the head of Kenya's largest opposition party, capping a tumultuous period of political transition.
In a statement posted on Friday, 21 November 2025, Senator Oginga announced he was taking a "short sabbatical to recollect, recharge, and reset," assuring the public that he is in "good health and high spirits." His sister, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, confirmed the trip, stating he would be away for three days to rest after a "hectic period."
The sabbatical follows an intense month for the 82-year-old veteran politician, who stepped into the leadership of ODM following the death of his younger brother, Raila Odinga, on 15 October 2025. Dr. Oginga was appointed acting leader by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) on 16 October 2025, a decision aimed at ensuring stability and continuity during a period of national mourning. His position was later formally approved by the party's National Governing Council on 13 November 2025, ahead of ODM's 20th-anniversary celebrations in Mombasa.
Beyond managing the party's transition, Dr. Oginga was a central figure in the national funeral arrangements for the former Prime Minister. This period also saw him navigating internal party dynamics, including public criticism from figures like Saboti MP Caleb Amisi over the timing of his appointment, and steering the party's commitment to the 'broad-based government' arrangement with President William Ruto's administration.
Dr. Oginga's temporary step-back, though brief, occurs at a critical juncture. As the new party leader, his immediate task is to unify ODM and chart its course towards the 2027 general election. In recent public statements, he has vowed to keep the party united against divisive forces and to negotiate assertively for the party's stake in any future political alignments, stating he would not lead ODM into the opposition.
His leadership is seen as crucial for maintaining the delicate political truce established between his late brother and President Ruto, an arrangement designed to foster national stability. As the custodian of this pact, his guidance is central to managing the power-sharing relationship between ODM and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) until the next election cycle.
Before assuming the party leadership, Dr. Oburu Oginga has had a long and varied political career. He is currently the elected Senator for Siaya County and serves as the Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy. His experience also includes serving as a Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency, an Assistant Minister for Finance in the Grand Coalition Government (2008-2013), and a representative for Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 2018 to 2022. This extensive background in national and regional governance informs his current role at a pivotal moment for Kenyan politics.
While the sabbatical is short, the political landscape Dr. Oginga returns to will demand his full attention as he works to solidify his leadership, manage internal party expectations, and navigate the complex relationship with the government, all while upholding the significant political legacy of the Odinga family.
