Luo Council Chairman Ker Odungi Randa dismisses the Ugunja 'coronation' as a fabrication, insisting the race to replace Raila Odinga remains wide open.

The race to fill the colossal political vacuum left by the late Raila Odinga hit a sharp detour on Tuesday. In a move that sent shockwaves through Nyanza’s political elite, the Luo Council of Elders categorically denied endorsing Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi as the community’s new spokesperson.
For days, whispers in Kisumu and Siaya suggested that Wandayi had effectively secured the blessing of the elders during a high-profile visit to his Ugunja home. The narrative was simple: with the "Enigma" gone, the baton had been passed to the Cabinet Secretary. But Ker Odungi Randa, the Council’s chairman, shattered that assumption with a single, authoritative statement.
Speaking from Kisumu, Ker Randa did not mince words. He termed the reports of Wandayi’s installation as a "fabrication" and a misinterpretation of a standard cultural visit. The gathering at Wandayi’s home, attended by a delegation of MPs, MCAs, and church leaders, was widely viewed by analysts as a soft launch for Wandayi’s bid to consolidate the Luo vote.
“Take it from me, as the ‘Ker’ of the Luo,” Randa declared, his tone leaving little room for debate. “If you hear that we endorsed anyone, that is a fabrication. There is no kingpin in the Luo community after the passing of Raila Odinga.”
Randa clarified that while the elders visited the CS, it was not a political anointing. “We have so many people who want to be the kingpin, but we have not endorsed anyone,” he added, effectively resetting the succession clock.
The denial blows the succession race wide open. Since Raila Odinga’s passing in October, the region has been in a state of quiet political vertigo. The title of "Luo Kingpin" is not merely ceremonial; it carries the weight of negotiating power with the national government and the ability to direct millions of votes.
Wandayi is not the only heavyweight eyeing the mantle. The field is crowded with ambitious figures, each bringing a different flavor of leadership:
For the average resident in Kondele or Migori, this palace intrigue matters. The lack of a unified voice risks fracturing the community’s bargaining power ahead of the 2027 General Election. A fragmented Nyanza could mean diminished influence in Nairobi, affecting everything from infrastructure projects to the price of unga.
Political analyst Mark Oloo notes that the Elders are likely treading carefully to avoid alienating any faction. “Endorsing Wandayi now would have sparked a rebellion from the Babu Owino and Wanga camps,” Oloo observed. “The Elders are buying time to see who naturally rises to the top.”
As the dust settles on the Ugunja drama, one thing is clear: the shoes left behind are too big for any one person to fill overnight. For now, the throne sits empty, and the audition continues.
