A sweeping FBI investigation into illegal sports betting has implicated top NBA figures, raising questions about league integrity and resonating within Kenya's own rapidly expanding sports betting landscape.

GLOBAL – The National Basketball Association (NBA) is confronting a significant corruption crisis after a sweeping federal investigation led to the arrests of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups on Thursday, October 23, 2025. The arrests are part of two separate but related inquiries into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games, with alleged links to organised crime families. The developments have sent shockwaves through the global sports community and cast a spotlight on the integrity of professional basketball, a topic of keen interest in Kenya, where sports betting is a multi-billion shilling industry.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, the investigation has resulted in charges against more than 30 individuals across 11 states for offenses including wire fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling. FBI Director Kash Patel described the schemes as a "sports rigging operation that spanned the course of years" and involved "tens of millions of dollars in fraud."
Terry Rozier is one of six defendants in a case dubbed "Operation Nothing But Bet." He is accused of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors allege Rozier provided non-public information about player injuries and his own playing status to associates, who then placed bets based on the tips. One specific incident mentioned in the indictment occurred in March 2023, when Rozier, then with the Charlotte Hornets, allegedly informed bettors he would exit a game early with a supposed injury, leading to significant wagers on his underperformance.
Chauncey Billups, a Hall of Fame player, was arrested in connection with a separate indictment involving a sophisticated, nationwide scheme to rig high-stakes poker games. Prosecutors claim that Billups and other former athletes, referred to as "face cards," were used to lure wealthy individuals into games that were fixed using fraudulent card shufflers and X-ray tables. The operation was allegedly backed by several La Cosa Nostra crime families. Both Rozier and Billups deny the allegations and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In response to the arrests, the NBA announced on Thursday, October 23, that both Rozier and Billups have been placed on immediate leave from their teams. The league stated it takes the allegations with the "utmost seriousness" and that the "integrity of our game remains our top priority."
Despite the significant off-court distractions, both the Miami Heat and the Portland Trail Blazers secured victories in their first games following the arrests. On Friday, October 24, 2025 (EAT: Saturday, October 25), the Miami Heat defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 146-114. The Heat delivered a historically dominant first-half performance, scoring 86 points to take a 39-point lead, the largest halftime advantage in the franchise's history. Center Bam Adebayo led the team with 24 points.
Adebayo and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra expressed their support for Rozier, calling him a "brother" and a positive presence in the locker room. "We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated to reporters.
Similarly, the Portland Trail Blazers, under the guidance of interim coach Tiago Splitter, defeated the Golden State Warriors 139-119 on the same night. Splitter, a former NBA champion from Brazil, was appointed after Billups was placed on leave. Deni Avdija led the Trail Blazers with 26 points.
While this scandal is unfolding thousands of miles away, its implications resonate strongly in Kenya, where the sports betting industry has seen explosive growth. The sector is regulated by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) under the Betting, Lotteries, and Gaming Act. The rise of mobile money and internet penetration has made betting highly accessible, turning it into a significant part of the culture and economy.
The NBA scandal serves as a critical case study on the potential dangers of sports gambling, particularly the risks of insider information and match-fixing that can erode the integrity of sports. As Kenyan authorities continue to refine regulations, including the recent Gambling Control Act, the events in the U.S. highlight the constant need for vigilance, robust regulatory frameworks, and the promotion of responsible gambling to protect both consumers and the integrity of the sports they follow passionately. The global nature of sports and betting means that a crisis of confidence in a major league like the NBA can have ripple effects, influencing public perception and regulatory approaches worldwide.
