The "Papa wa Roma" and the Prime Cabinet Secretary bury the hatchet to fence off their backyard, but critics smell a plot to auction the Luhya vote to the highest bidder come 2027.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi have declared a new political ceasefire, locking hands with Wycliffe Oparanya in a renewed "Western Alliance" that they claim will finally deliver the elusive Luhya unity.
But beneath the rhetoric of brotherhood lies a cold calculation for 2027. With President Ruto seeking a second term, this consolidation is less about a Luhya presidency and more about raising the bargaining stakes for the region’s support in the next election cycle. The "Papa wa Roma" and the Prime Cabinet Secretary are burying the hatchet to fence off their backyard from ODM encroachment.
Speaking at the funeral of former MP Enoch Kibunguchy, the leaders termed the recent deaths of regional stalwarts like Cyrus Jirongo as a wake-up call. "If we are serious about uniting our people, we must first unite ourselves," Wetang’ula declared. "Mudavadi, Oparanya, and I have agreed to put words into action."
The strategy is clear: present a united front to negotiate a bigger slice of the "national cake"—infrastructure, cabinet slots, and resources. They are effectively telling the President: "You cannot buy us retail anymore; you must buy us wholesale."
Critics, however, smell a rat. They argue that this unity drive is merely a way to auction the community’s vote to the highest bidder. "They are uniting to eat, not to lead," fired a local activist. "We have heard this song before every election. It always ends with them in big cars and us in the same mud."
As the political temperature rises, the question remains: Is this the dawn of a powerful Mulembe Nation, or just another chapter in the region’s history of being the country’s most attractive political bride?
