General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has declared a ban on opposition leader Bobi Wine from future Ugandan elections, citing national security following the disputed 2026 polls.

The velvet glove has been removed in Kampala. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has unilaterally declared a ban on opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, from participating in any future elections.
The declaration, made via a post on X (formerly Twitter), cites "national security" as the justification for the move. "Whether Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is in the country or not, I, as CDF... ban him from any further participation in the electoral exercises of Uganda," Muhoozi wrote. The proclamation follows a tense and disputed January 2026 general election, which saw Museveni secured a seventh term amidst allegations of fraud.
The "ban" is the latest in a series of chilling threats directed at the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader. Earlier this week, Muhoozi posted—and then deleted—tweets threatening to "extinguish" the NUP and even threatening physical harm to Bobi Wine. He also issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Wine to surrender to the police.
International observers have condemned the rhetoric, warning that the militarization of Ugandan politics is pushing the country toward instability. "You cannot ban a citizen from their constitutional right by tweet," remarked a Nairobi-based geopolitical analyst. "This is a suspension of the constitution by military fiat."
For Bobi Wine's supporters, the "ban" confirms their worst fears: that the democratic space in Uganda has not just shrunk, it has been walled off completely. As the dust settles on the 2026 polls, the message from the barracks is clear—dissent will no longer be tolerated, and the future of Uganda's leadership is a family affair.
