“Goons Ferried from Nairobi”: Homa Bay MP Claims Outsiders, Not Locals, Torched Mawego Police Station

Homa Bay County, Kenya – MP Peter Kaluma Claims Outsiders Behind Mawego Police Station Arson

In the wake of the destruction of Mawego Police Station during heated protests in Homa Bay County, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has made a striking claim: the attack was not carried out by local youth, but by individuals allegedly transported from Nairobi to incite violence.

Speaking on July 3, Kaluma firmly distanced the local community from the arson that occurred amid a funeral procession for slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang, whose death has triggered widespread anger and calls for justice.

“The goons who burnt Mawego Police Station were ferried from Nairobi,” Kaluma said.
“Our students from Mawego and across our land didn’t burn the station.”

Kaluma emphasized that the police station had remained intact for years, even during periods of heightened community tension—including the immediate aftermath of Ojwang’s death. He called the timing and execution of the attack suspicious and pointed to the possibility of deliberate external provocation.

The incident involved a large crowd storming the police compound, setting fire to buildings and escalating an already volatile situation in the region. While investigations are ongoing, Kaluma’s remarks seek to shift the narrative away from local blame, suggesting instead that politically motivated agitators may have orchestrated the chaos.

The destruction of the station has deepened mistrust between residents and authorities, further fueling demands for a transparent investigation into both Ojwang’s death and the events surrounding the protest violence.

As tensions simmer, the question remains: Who orchestrated the attack on Mawego Police Station—and to what end?
