A pre-dawn assault on a police training facility in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has left seven police officers dead and 13 injured, highlighting the escalating security challenges in the region bordering Afghanistan.

Seven police officers and six militants were killed on Saturday, October 11, 2025, after an attack on a police training centre in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, northwestern Pakistan. The assault, which also left 13 officers injured, began late Friday night, October 10, 2025, when militants rammed an explosives-laden truck into the main gate of the Ratta Kulachi Police Training School.
Following the initial explosion, which collapsed part of a boundary wall and killed a police officer, armed militants in uniform stormed the compound, opening fire with automatic weapons and hurling grenades. Dera Ismail Khan police chief Sajjad Ahmad stated that approximately 200 recruits and their trainers were present at the facility during the attack. A fierce gun battle ensued, lasting nearly six hours, before security forces cleared the compound.
This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have plagued Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a region that serves as a base for several armed groups and borders Afghanistan. Pakistan has been grappling with a worsening security situation, with militant groups, primarily the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), frequently targeting security forces and government officials.
Just this week, at least 12 Pakistani soldiers, including three officers, were killed in separate militant attacks in the region. On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, 11 soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel and a major, died in an ambush by Pakistani Taliban militants on a convoy in Orakzai District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In response, Pakistani security forces conducted multiple raids on militant hideouts, killing 30 militants.
Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban of harbouring TTP militants, alleging that the group launches cross-border attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians from Afghan soil. Kabul has consistently denied these allegations. The two nations exchanged sharp warnings on Friday, October 10, 2025, after Afghanistan accused Pakistan of violating its airspace and bombing a border town. The Pakistani military, in turn, vowed to defend its territorial integrity.
Dera Ismail Khan police spokesman Yaqoob Khan confirmed that all six militants involved in the police training centre attack were killed. Security teams recovered suicide vests, explosives, modern weapons, and ammunition from the slain militants. All 200 trainees and staff at the training centre were safely evacuated. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) initially claimed responsibility for the assault but later retracted its statement.
The exact affiliation of the militants involved in the Dera Ismail Khan attack, beyond the initial and retracted claim by the TTP, remains uncertain. The long-term implications of the escalating cross-border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan on regional stability are also a significant concern.
The security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is expected to remain volatile. Observers will be closely watching for any further retaliatory actions from Pakistani security forces and the response from militant groups. The diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, particularly concerning border security and the alleged harbouring of militants, will also be a critical area to monitor in the coming weeks.
