Authorities in Mombasa have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of gang involvement after he was found in possession of a machete during a targeted police operation aimed at dismantling criminal networks in the coastal city. The suspect, reportedly a former taxi driver, was apprehended in a residential area following the execution of a search warrant by law enforcement officers.
The operation is part of a broader initiative launched by police to address a recent surge in gang-related violence that has unsettled several neighborhoods across Mombasa. The suspect’s weapon has been seized as evidence, and he is currently being held for interrogation at a local police station.
Acting Mombasa County Police Commander James Onyango confirmed the arrest and stated that the operation was one of several simultaneous efforts being carried out across the city. “This arrest marks a significant step in our mission to curb organized crime. We are confident that removing this suspect from the streets will disrupt local gang networks,” Onyango said.
The crackdown comes amid growing public concern over the rise in machete-wielding gangs, commonly linked to violent robberies, extortion, and turf wars. Residents in areas such as Likoni, Kisauni, and Majengo have repeatedly called on authorities to take more aggressive action against criminal groups that operate with impunity.
Commander Onyango assured the public that police would sustain pressure on gangs and continue to conduct intelligence-led operations to restore peace. “We are working around the clock to secure our communities. These criminals must know that there is no safe haven for them in Mombasa,” he said.
Human rights groups have called on law enforcement agencies to ensure that anti-gang operations respect due process and avoid profiling or unlawful use of force. Meanwhile, local leaders are urging a multi-pronged approach that includes community engagement, youth empowerment programs, and socioeconomic interventions to address the root causes of gang recruitment.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned once preliminary investigations are complete.
