KRA Grants 24-Hour Extension for Tax Filing Amidst Last-Minute Rush and System Slowdowns
The Kenya Revenue Authority has extended the income tax filing deadline by 24 hours to midnight on July 1, 2025, after the online iTax portal experienced slowdowns due to a last-minute surge in filings. KRA service centers will remain open late to accommodate taxpayers.

Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has granted a 24-hour extension for the filing of income tax returns, pushing the deadline to midnight on July 1, 2025. The decision comes as a relief to thousands of Kenyans who have been facing challenges with the online tax portal, which has experienced significant slowdowns due to the last-minute rush to file.
KRA Commissioner Humphrey Wattanga announced that all service centers and Huduma Centres will remain open until 8:00 pm on June 30 and will operate continuously on July 1 to accommodate the surge of filers. The tax authority has also reminded all Kenyans with a Personal Identification Number (PIN), including those with no income, that they are required to file their returns. The KRA acknowledged that rising inflation, which was estimated at 5.6% in June 2025, has put a strain on many households, potentially affecting their ability to comply with the deadline. To further assist taxpayers, the KRA has been promoting its mobile “Jiondolee Jam” campaign and has urged all filers to use the iTax portal, promising to monitor system performance and provide 24/7 support through its hotlines.
