**A group of best-performing headteachers and teachers from Kiharu Constituency are on a fully-funded, five-night trip to Dubai, a reward initiative by area MP Ndindi Nyoro aimed at motivating educators and boosting academic excellence.**

A select group of Kiharu's most successful educators have traded their classrooms for the desert metropolis of Dubai this week, a grand gesture of appreciation for their role in improving the constituency's academic fortunes. The five-night, all-expenses-paid trip is the latest installment of a motivation program spearheaded by area Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, to reward top-performing and most-improved schools.
This initiative, which benefits educators from both primary and day secondary schools, is designed to ignite a spirit of healthy competition and recognize the often-unsung efforts of teachers. The current cohort includes headteachers from Ngaru, Githagara, Technology, Maragi, and Githuguya primary schools, who were selected based on their schools' performance in last year's national examinations.
The trip is more than just a vacation; it's a strategic investment in human capital. The itinerary includes a city tour, a dinner cruise, a visit to the iconic Burj Khalifa, and a desert safari, offering the teachers exposure and a well-deserved break. Nyoro has emphasized that the program is privately funded, stating, “Public resources do not provide for such incentives, but as Africans, Africa is our business.” This distinction is critical in a country where the use of public funds is under constant scrutiny.
The motivation scheme is a component of Nyoro's broader 'Masomo Bora' (Quality Education) programme, which has seen significant investment in local education. This larger initiative, funded primarily through the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), has subsidized school fees for over 10,000 day-school students, improved school infrastructure by tiling all 112 public primary schools, and provided daily meals for learners.
While the initiative has been widely praised by many residents and education stakeholders as a morale booster, it has also sparked a conversation about the nature of teacher motivation. Some online commentators have questioned whether rewarding headteachers is the most effective approach, suggesting that classroom teachers are the primary drivers of success and should also be included. Others have raised concerns that such incentives could inadvertently encourage unhealthy competition or teaching to the test, rather than fostering holistic knowledge.
Nonetheless, the beneficiaries themselves have expressed immense gratitude. Beatrice Wachira, the headteacher of Technology Primary School, noted her delight and urged her colleagues to continue working hard. The program, which started in 2022, has a built-in alternative for repeat winners, offering a trip to Malaysia for those who have previously visited Dubai.
As these educators return, the real measure of the program's success will be seen in the classrooms and staffrooms of Kiharu. The hope is that a trip to the city of gold will translate into a golden age for the constituency's academic performance, proving that investing in teachers is the most direct path to empowering students.
