Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team, led by Ferdinand Omanyala, qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships by finishing second in their heat
May 11, 2025 – Nairobi, Kenya – Kenya’s men’s 4x100m relay team has successfully qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo after a stellar performance at the World Relays held over the weekend.
The team finished second in their heat, clocking a season-best time that guaranteed them an automatic berth in the global championship event.
The team was anchored by African 100m record-holder Ferdinand Omanyala, who delivered a powerful final leg to push Kenya across the finish line and into qualification territory.
“This is a great step for Kenyan sprinting. We’re not just participating — we’re competing,” Omanyala said after the race.
Traditionally known for middle- and long-distance dominance, Kenya’s qualification in the 4x100m sprint relay marks a milestone moment for the country’s sprint program, which has been gaining traction in recent years under targeted development.
With the qualification secured, the team now shifts focus to intensified training and baton-exchange precision, as they prepare to face the world’s best in Tokyo in September 2025.
Athletics Kenya officials praised the team’s performance, calling it “a sign of Kenya’s growing sprint potential” and committed to supporting preparations in the run-up to the championships.
