Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei has asked Tanzania to release former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and two Kenyan activists detained at Dar es Salaam’s airport.
DAR ES SALAAM/NAIROBI – May 19
Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei, has called on the Tanzanian government to immediately release former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and two Kenyan activists who were detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
In a strongly worded statement, Sing’Oei appealed to Tanzanian authorities to act in accordance with regional cooperation standards under the East African Community (EAC) treaty.
“We strongly urge the authorities in Tanzania to release the former Chief Justice of Kenya and his delegation, consistent with the norms of the East African Community,” he said.
The circumstances surrounding the detention remain unclear. Kenyan officials say they are actively seeking clarification on why the former CJ and the activists were held upon arrival in Dar es Salaam.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Kenyan High Commission in Dar, led by High Commissioner Isaac Njenga, has already initiated diplomatic engagement with Tanzanian officials.
“The mission is in contact with Tanzanian authorities and is working swiftly to resolve the matter,” Sing’Oei added, promising that the government would keep the public informed on any developments.
The East African Community treaty emphasizes free movement of persons, respect for human rights, and cooperation among member states. Kenyan authorities have expressed concern that the detention of such high-profile figures may contravene these regional commitments.
The incident has sparked public debate, with human rights groups and political observers urging transparency and adherence to international norms in resolving the matter.
