Kenyans will bid farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga with a four-day state funeral program culminating in his burial on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Bondo, Siaya County, honouring his wish for a swift interment.
The nation is set to honour one of its most prominent political figures, Raila Amollo Odinga, with a comprehensive state funeral. The detailed program, announced by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, outlines a series of events leading to his burial at his Opoda home in Bondo, Siaya County.
Deputy President Kindiki, co-chairing the National Funeral Steering Committee with Senator Oburu Oginga, confirmed that the arrangements align with Odinga's personal wish to be interred within 72 hours of his passing.
A Kenyan delegation, led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, departed for Mumbai, India, on Wednesday evening to facilitate the repatriation of Odinga's remains.
The body is expected to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi at 8:30 AM on Thursday, October 16, 2025, where it will be received with full state honours by President William Ruto and members of the Odinga family. Following this, the cortege will proceed to Lee Funeral Home.
Later on Thursday, the public will have an opportunity to pay their final respects as Odinga's body lies in state at Parliament Buildings from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Security measures are in place, with roads around Parliament temporarily closed, and mourners are advised to use public transport.
A national prayer service is scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at Nyayo National Stadium, starting at 8:00 AM. This state event is expected to draw thousands, including local and international dignitaries. After the service, the body will be moved to Odinga's Karen residence for an overnight vigil.
On Saturday, October 18, 2025, the procession will head to Kisumu, where a public viewing will be held at Moi Stadium from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. From Kisumu, the body will be transported by road to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, for a final overnight vigil.
The burial ceremony will take place on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at his Opoda home in Bondo, Siaya County. The interment will combine state protocol with the traditions of the Anglican Church, to which Odinga faithfully belonged.
Raila Amollo Odinga, a former Prime Minister and a towering figure in Kenyan politics, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 80, after suffering a cardiac arrest in India. President William Ruto declared a seven-day period of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country and in Kenyan missions abroad. Odinga's political career spanned over four decades, marked by his relentless pursuit of democratic reforms and good governance. He played a pivotal role in shaping Kenya's political landscape and was widely regarded as a champion of democracy and a Pan-Africanist.
The National Funeral Steering Committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga (Odinga's elder brother), is coordinating the arrangements. This committee comprises representatives from the government and the Odinga family, ensuring a dignified farewell that respects both his personal wishes and national stature. Public grieving spaces with large screens will be set up in Nairobi and other major towns to allow Kenyans to follow the ceremonies.
The government has appealed for peace and unity during this period of mourning, urging Kenyans to honour Odinga's lifelong message of tolerance and national cohesion. Security has been heightened in key areas to ensure the smooth conduct of the funeral proceedings.
Further advisories regarding traffic, security, and access to various venues are expected from the National Funeral Steering Committee. The nation will observe a public holiday on Friday, October 17, 2025, in honour of the late leader.
