The Kenya Simbas’ hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup have been dashed after a narrow 29-23 loss to Zimbabwe in the Rugby Africa Cup semi-final. The Simbas led at halftime but were unable to hold on as a determined Zimbabwean side staged a second-half comeback to clinch the victory.
Nairobi, Kenya – July 14, 2025
Kenya’s national rugby team, the Simbas, saw their dreams of qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup come to a crushing end following a narrow 29–23 defeat to Zimbabwe in a tense Rugby Africa Cup semifinal clash on July 13.
In a match played with high stakes and emotional intensity, the Simbas appeared to be on course for victory after a dominant first half that saw them take an 18–13 lead into the break. Displaying fluid attacking play and disciplined defense, the Kenyans had the momentum and crowd behind them. However, a spirited second-half resurgence from Zimbabwe turned the tide, as the Sables scored 16 unanswered points to storm into the final.
The Simbas’ undoing came in the final 20 minutes, where a combination of missed scoring chances, handling errors, and defensive breakdowns allowed Zimbabwe to assert control—particularly through their powerful set-pieces and clinical kicking.
“It’s a bitter pill to swallow,” said head coach Paul Odera after the match. “We had control of the game for long stretches, but at this level, lapses in focus are punished. We must regroup and finish the tournament with pride.”
The loss means Kenya will now have to wait at least another four years for a chance to return to the global rugby stage, having last qualified for the World Cup in 2003. For a team that had shown promise throughout the competition, the defeat is a major setback—but not the end of their campaign.
The Simbas will now face Algeria in the third-place playoff scheduled for July 15. While no World Cup ticket is at stake, the match will be an important test of character and resilience as Kenya looks to close the tournament on a high note and lay a foundation for the future.
Zimbabwe’s victory propels them to the final, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between Namibia and Senegal. The champion of the Rugby Africa Cup will secure direct qualification to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, while the runner-up earns a spot in the global repechage tournament.
Kenya Rugby Union officials have called for reflection and investment, emphasizing the need to strengthen grassroots development, conditioning programs, and international exposure to bridge the gap with Africa’s top rugby nations.
As the Simbas lick their wounds, the road to 2027 may be over—but the path to revival has only just begun.
