Kenyans are set to bid farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in a four-day state funeral programme culminating in his burial on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Bondo, Siaya County. The elaborate arrangements reflect Odinga's significant impact on the nation's political landscape.
Kenya is observing a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 80, in Kochi, India, after suffering a cardiac arrest. President William Ruto announced that Odinga would be accorded a state funeral with full military honours, recognising his immense contributions to Kenya's democracy. The National State Funeral Committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Odinga's elder brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, has outlined a detailed four-day programme. A state funeral service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, commencing at 8:00 AM EAT. Raila Amolo Odinga, born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Kisumu District, was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades. He was the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya's first Vice President and a key figure in the independence struggle. After studying mechanical engineering in East Germany, Odinga returned to Kenya in 1970 and became politically active, advocating for government reforms and multi-party democracy.
His political journey was marked by periods of detention without trial, notably for six years after being accused of involvement in the 1982 attempted coup against President Daniel arap Moi. He also sought refuge in Norway in 1991. Odinga served as the Member of Parliament for Lang'ata Constituency from 1992 to 2013 and held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Energy.
Odinga ran for president five times, in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022, each time alleging electoral fraud. He served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013 following the contentious 2007 presidential election. In 2018, he famously reconciled with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, leading to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). Most recently, in February 2025, he unsuccessfully vied for the African Union Commission Chairperson position.
