Suna East MP Junet Mohamed said the cost of living is no longer a crisis and suggested that complaints stem from political demonstrations, even as a government committee begins work on compensating protest victims.
Nairobi, August 15, 2025 — Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has sparked debate after claiming that Kenya’s cost of living has begun to stabilise, dismissing much of the public anger as a product of opposition-led protests rather than underlying economic conditions.
In a media interview, Junet argued that the government’s recently announced compensation plan for victims of political demonstrations would help address grievances. He noted that the majority of casualties in recent protests were opposition supporters and urged patience as the state works on a reparations framework.
“I personally lost 17 supporters while escorting Raila Odinga during previous demonstrations,” Junet said, adding that the new compensation committee has 120 days to develop a fair payout system.
The legislator appealed to Kenyans to avoid violent protests and allow the government space to deliver on its economic recovery agenda. He insisted that the administration was taking steps to stabilise prices and restore growth.
His remarks triggered sharp reactions on social media, with many Kenyans disputing his assessment of the cost-of-living crisis. Commentators pointed to persistently high food and fuel prices and questioned whether the government’s policies have delivered meaningful relief to households.
Analysts say Junet’s comments reflect the political tug-of-war over Kenya’s economic narrative, with the government seeking to project progress while critics argue that inflation and joblessness remain pressing concerns.
