The move to strip Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of his powerful party docket is being interpreted in Kakamega, Bungoma, and Vihiga not as a disciplinary action, but as an ethnic purge. Following the departure of Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang'ula to the government side, Sifuna was the highest-ranking Luhya in the opposition.

His removal has triggered a visceral reaction. "We are tired of being the flower girls at everyone else's wedding," remarked Saboti MP Caleb Amisi. The sentiment reflects a growing exhaustion with the region's role as a vote basket that yields no seat at the high table.
