The Kenyan national football team, the Harambee Stars, has begun an intensive residential training camp at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi as they prepare for their historic first-ever appearance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Nairobi, Kenya – July 14, 2025
Kenya’s locally-based national football team, the Harambee Stars, has officially commenced its residential training camp at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as preparations intensify ahead of the country’s maiden appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) set to kick off in August.
The 29-man provisional squad reported to camp under the watchful eye of newly appointed head coach Benni McCarthy, who has outlined fitness, tactical sharpness, and team chemistry as the central pillars of the camp’s agenda. The players will undergo a rigorous daily schedule that includes technical drills, endurance sessions, and internal practice matches, all aimed at trimming the squad to the final 23 ahead of the continental tournament.
“This camp is about building a unified, battle-ready squad,” said McCarthy. “It’s an opportunity for every player to prove they deserve to wear the Kenyan jersey when we walk onto the field for the first time in CHAN history.”
The African Nations Championship is a CAF-organized tournament exclusively for players competing in their domestic leagues. Kenya’s qualification for the 2025 edition not only represents a milestone for local football development but also offers a crucial platform for showcasing homegrown talent on an international stage.
With Kenya set to host Group A matches at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums, the home advantage could play a critical role in propelling the Harambee Stars past the group stages. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has urged fans to rally behind the team, emphasizing the importance of national support in what could be a transformative moment for Kenyan football.
Observers have noted that CHAN presents a unique opportunity for emerging players to attract attention from international scouts and professional clubs—adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition for final squad positions.
Coach McCarthy, a former South African international and UEFA Champions League winner, brings high-level experience and tactical insight to the team’s preparation. His appointment is seen as a bold step by FKF to infuse fresh ideas and instill a winning mentality.
Kenya has been drawn into a challenging group alongside Ghana, Sudan, and Libya—teams with strong CHAN pedigrees. However, with a solid camp and the energy of the home crowd behind them, the Harambee Stars are determined to defy expectations.
The final squad announcement is expected in late July, following the conclusion of the training camp.
