Ursula von der Leyen warns the EU is "driving with the handbrake on" and urges the removal of internal barriers to compete with global economic giants.

Ursula von der Leyen has delivered a stinging reality check to the European Parliament: the EU is a giant driving with the handbrake on. In a passionate plea for survival, the Commission President declared that the bloc must "tear down" the internal barriers that are turning its economy into a fragmented relic.
Addressing a plenary session in Strasbourg, von der Leyen didn't mince words. She described the current state of the Single Market as "fragmentation on steroids." Her message was clear: Europe has the second-largest economy in the world, but it is strangling itself with red tape while the US and China sprint ahead. The "So What?" is the difference between being a global superpower and a global spectator.
The proposal is ambitious: a 28th regime, a unified "EU Inc." status that allows companies to exist as European entities rather than French, German, or Italian ones. Von der Leyen wants this agreed by March and implemented by next year. It is a blistering pace for a bureaucracy famous for its lethargy.
"Competitiveness is not just the foundation of our prosperity, but of our security," she warned. In a world of geopolitical sharks, a divided Europe is food. The barriers she wants to smash are the conflicting legal regimes that make cross-border business a nightmare.
Von der Leyen’s vision is inching closer to a federalized economy, a "United States of Europe" in all but name. But tearing down barriers means tearing down national sovereignty in economic affairs.
The Commission President has thrown down the gauntlet. Now, the member states must decide if they want to remain big fish in small ponds, or join forces to survive in the ocean.
