Ola Energy and Proto Energy launch a partnership to establish autogas refilling points countrywide, offering motorists a cheaper, cleaner alternative to petrol.
The drive to convert Kenyan motorists from petrol to gas has shifted into high gear. Oil marketer Ola Energy has inked a strategic deal with LPG giant Proto Energy to roll out autogas refilling stations across its nationwide retail network.
The partnership targets the growing number of taxi drivers and private motorists retrofitting their vehicles to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to escape punishing fuel prices. Autogas is currently retailing at approximately 40% cheaper than petrol per kilometer driven, making it an attractive alternative in a tough economy.
Until now, the adoption of autogas has been hampered by a lack of refilling points. "You can’t convert your car if you can't find the fuel," said Ola Energy CEO. "By integrating Proto’s LPG technology into our service stations, we are removing the range anxiety that holds drivers back."
The rollout will begin in Nairobi and Mombasa before expanding to major highways. The initiative aligns with the government’s green energy agenda, which seeks to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector.
