Trans Nzoia governor dismisses rumours he wants a cabinet seat.
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has emphatically refuted speculation regarding his potential shift to the Kenya Kwanza government, following a courtesy meeting he accorded Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in Kitale.
On Monday, July 28, 2025, CS Murkomen visited Trans Nzoia to preside over the 22nd Jukwaa La Usalama, a grassroots security initiative. In line with standard procedure, Governor Natembeya hosted the senior official at his County Headquarters, where the governor formally received and greeted him. Natembeya emphasised that such interactions are protocol-driven, not reflective of political alignment .
Addressing the media the following day, Natembeya made clear that he harbors no ambition of joining the national executive.
“If you offer me a CS slot, what will that help me with? Nothing. I was employed there before… the work I am focusing on now is serving the people who elected me,” he said .
He maintained that his role remains firmly anchored in the opposition and committed to the electorate that placed him in office.
Natembeya’s statements strike at the heart of ongoing speculation that he might realign politically. Observers had raised eyebrows over the cordial reception of Murkomen, especially given the ideological divide between Natembeya’s United Opposition camp and the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition. The governor’s focus on protocol underlines his intent to avoid misinterpretation of civic interactions as political manoeuvres .
Political optics: The friendliness shown during the visit drew heavy scrutiny, prompting political analysts to re-examine boundaries between administrative duty and partisan perception.
Institutional decorum: As a former county commissioner himself, Natembeya emphasised institutional respect—senior national officials are customarily expected to be received by the governor when visiting their county.
Control of narrative: By publicly rejecting cabinet overtures, Natembeya aims to consolidate his credibility among his opposition base, projecting continuity rather than political shift.
The political crossroads in Trans Nzoia could be illustrative of a broader challenge: how regional leaders navigate protocol without triggering suspicion of alliance. Natembeya’s firm stance reinforces his opposition identity, signalling that hosting a top official does not equate to ideological conversion.
Natembeya’s public comments may close the chapter on speculation—for now—but they also set the terms for future interactions with national officials. Going forward, his handling of official visits will likely aim to maintain transparency and reinforce his primary loyalty to the electorate.
In summary, Governor Natembeya’s meeting with CS Murkomen was executed under formal protocol, not political convenience—and his public rejection of any Cabinet appointment reflects a conscious effort to dispel doubts about his opposition credentials and reaffirm focus on county-level service.
