Nairobi, 15 October 2025 — In the wake of the sudden death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, President William Ruto has declared a seven-day national mourning period and announced that Odinga will be accorded a state funeral with full honours.

• The mourning period begins immediately and will last “from today until sunset of the day of his interment.”

• Raila Odinga will receive a state funeral with full military honours and all attendant state protocols. 

• A national funeral committee will be chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Senator Oburu Odinga (Raila’s brother). 

• A delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, as well as Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen and Hassan Joho, has already departed for India to oversee the repatriation of the late leader’s remains. Raila’s widow Ida Odinga is also part of the delegation. 

• The Government of India has offered assistance in facilitating the repatriation.
