Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), asserts that the prevailing sentiment among Kenyans is a desire for the current administration to serve only one term, driven by widespread economic hardship and disillusionment with governance.
Rigathi Gachagua, the leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has stated that Kenyans are overwhelmed by the challenges under President William Ruto's government, leading to a dominant political narrative of 'Wantam' (One-Term) for the current administration. Speaking to a local television station on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua emphasised that issues such as education and health have become secondary to the public's desire for a change in leadership.
Gachagua, who served as Kenya's second Deputy President from September 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024, highlighted that any leader deviating from the 'Wantam' movement risks political irrelevance. This sentiment, he noted, has permeated public discourse, overshadowing other critical national discussions.
The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) was officially launched by Gachagua on May 15, 2025, following his impeachment. The party, registered on February 3, 2025, positions itself as a national movement advocating for inclusive and accountable leadership, with its slogan 'Skiza Wakenya' (Listen to Kenyans). Gachagua has indicated that the DCP aims to provide a new political platform, particularly for the Mt Kenya region, which he claims lacked representation after his exit from government.
Gachagua's remarks come amidst a period of significant political realignment in Kenya. His new party is seen by analysts as a direct challenge to President Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election. The DCP's formation followed Gachagua's resignation from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on May 12, 2025, where he accused the party of betraying its founding principles and driving the country towards economic collapse.
The DCP's leadership includes interim Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala and Chairperson David Mingati, among others. The party's symbol, a hand holding an ear, signifies its commitment to listening to the concerns of Kenyans.
The 'Wantam' narrative, if it gains further traction, could significantly influence public debate and policy execution, potentially creating an environment of political uncertainty. Stakeholders are urging clarity on the timelines, costs, and safeguards associated with such a strong political shift. The focus on a single-term presidency could divert attention from long-term development goals and policy implementation, as political energy becomes concentrated on the upcoming general election.
Observers will be keenly watching the DCP's mobilisation efforts and how the 'Wantam' slogan resonates with the electorate across different regions. The government's response to this growing political narrative, particularly concerning economic policies and public engagement, will also be crucial. The upcoming Magarini parliamentary by-election, where DCP has fielded a candidate, will serve as an early test of the party's influence.
