A Virginia liquor store had an unexpected burglar over the Thanksgiving holiday: a raccoon that drank itself into a stupor before being found passed out on the bathroom floor.

The bizarre break-in offers a moment of levity, reminding Kenyans that while human-wildlife encounters here may involve crafty monkeys or majestic elephants, sometimes the most peculiar dramas unfold halfway across the world in the aisle of a liquor store.

Staff at the Ashland ABC store arrived on Saturday morning to a scene of chaos. Smashed bottles and pools of liquor littered the floor, with the trail of destruction leading to the bathroom. There, wedged between the toilet and a bin, was the furry culprit, fast asleep.

A Hangover for the History Books

"He fell through one of the ceiling tiles and went on a full-blown rampage, drinking everything," noted Animal Control Officer Samantha Martin of the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter. Based on the spilled bottles, the raccoon showed a clear preference for scotch.

Officer Martin was called to the scene to apprehend the intoxicated intruder. The shelter later joked on social media that the "suspect" was taken in to "sober up before questioning." The incident, dubbed the "Black Friday break-in," quickly gained viral attention.

After a few hours of rest at the shelter, the animal showed no signs of injury, aside from what officials humorously described as "maybe a hangover and poor life choices." It was then safely released back into the wild.

The store thanked the animal control unit for providing their unruly visitor with "a sober ride home."
