The education fraternity is in mourning following the tragic murder of a young teacher in Hulugho, Garissa County, who was killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants just three weeks after being employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The 24-year-old educator, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, was part of the new cohort of teachers posted to the region in January 2026 to bridge the chronic staffing gap. His dream of uplifting the community through education ended in a hail of bullets when militants raided the teachers' quarters in the dead of night.

"He Was Just a Boy"

"He had just received his first payslip," a tearful colleague recounted. "He bought books for the students with his own money. He told us he wanted to change the narrative of the North. Why kill someone who only carried a piece of chalk?"

The attack has sent panic through the teaching community in North Eastern Kenya. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to guarantee security or they will withdraw all non-local teachers from the border sub-counties.
