Muhoozi Kainerugaba sparks outrage by calling Kenyans "cowards" and boasting of killing opposition figures, triggering a diplomatic storm.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has once again tested the fragile diplomatic ties between Kampala and Nairobi, branding Kenyans "cowards" who "run when the kibokos start."
The son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, known for his erratic and incendiary social media presence, launched the tirade on January 20, 2026. His comments were not just a jab at national character; they were part of a darker, violent thread where he boasted about the alleged killing of 22 opposition supporters in Uganda, terming them "terrorists."
The General’s outburst seems to have been triggered by Kenyan support for Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine. "I have found that some Kenyans like to talk a lot on social media but cannot defend their opinions on a battlefield," Muhoozi taunted. This provoked a fierce exchange with CNN correspondent Larry Madowo, who amplified the General’s threats to "extinguish" the opposition.
Muhoozi’s pattern of behavior suggests a dangerous unpredictability. By baiting Kenya, he is playing to a domestic gallery, projecting strength. But calling a neighbor "cowards" while admitting to extrajudicial killings creates a diplomatic headache for President Museveni, who often has to play the adult in the room.
For Kenyans, the insults are annoying but the admission of violence is chilling. It serves as a grim reminder of the different political realities facing the two neighbors. As Muhoozi tweets, the region watches, wondering if the General’s thumbs will one day start a fire that cannot be put out with a delete button.
