Three people died on Argwings Kodhek Road when a speeding bus rammed a stalled lorry, reigniting anger over Nairobi’s negligent road safety culture.

Morning commuters on Nairobi’s Argwings Kodhek Road were confronted with a scene of carnage today as a speeding bus plowed into a stalled lorry, leaving three people dead and turning a busy artery into a zone of twisted metal and grief.
The crash, which occurred just after 7:00 AM EAT, has once again spotlighted the deadly negligence that defines the city’s public transport sector. Eyewitnesses report that the bus, racing to beat the morning rush, failed to notice the stationary lorry which had broken down hours earlier without proper warning signs.
"The bus was flying," said James Kamau, a security guard who witnessed the impact. "The lorry was there, right in the lane. There were no triangles, no branches. The bus driver tried to swerve at the last second, but the side of the bus was ripped open like a tin can."
Rescuers from the Kenya Red Cross and good Samaritans struggled to free passengers trapped in the wreckage. The three fatalities died on impact, while scores of injured survivors were rushed to nearby Nairobi Women’s Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital. The wail of sirens pierced the morning air, a grim soundtrack to a preventable tragedy.
Argwings Kodhek has become a notorious blackspot, but the root cause is often human error and mechanical failure.
As families gather at the City Mortuary to identify their loved ones, the cycle of blame begins. The police will promise a crackdown, the NTSA will issue a statement, and the bus company will likely rebrand. But for the three commuters who never made it to work today, the system has failed them in the most final way possible.
