Tanzanians react with shock and anger as the Trump administration suspends most visas citing security concerns, raising fears of economic and educational disruption in the region.

A diplomatic chill has descended on East Africa following the US Embassy’s confirmation that President Donald Trump has suspended visa issuance for Tanzanian nationals. The directive, part of the sweeping "Presidential Proclamation 10998," effectively locks thousands of Tanzanians out of the United States.
The suspension, which took effect on January 1, 2026, targets B1/B2 (business and tourism) visas, as well as student (F, M) and exchange (J) visas. The US Department of Homeland Security cited "significant security and vetting deficiencies" in Tanzania’s passport issuance and information-sharing systems as the trigger for the ban.
While the embassy termed it a "partial" suspension, the reality on the ground is a near-total freeze. Tanzanians can still apply, but they face an impossibly high burden of proof to overcome the presumption of ineligibility.
The Samia Suluhu administration has yet to issue a formal rebuttal, but sources indicate frantic back-channel lobbying in Washington. For now, the gates to America are closed for Tanzania, leaving many dreams deferred indefinitely.
