Construction experts warn that corruption has left 80% of Nairobi’s buildings unsafe, calling for an urgent audit and the prosecution of rogue developers.
The skyline of Nairobi is a facade masking a deadly reality. Professional associations in the built environment have issued a chilling verdict: only 15% of buildings in the capital are structurally safe, while over 80% are potential death traps erected on a foundation of graft.
This grim statistic comes in the wake of the South C building collapse, which has once again highlighted the criminal negligence of the National Construction Authority (NCA) and City Hall. The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) warns that we are "normalizing disaster."
Why are our buildings falling? It is rarely an engineering mystery; it is almost always a crime scene.
Experts are calling for a radical audit. "We need to demolish unsafe structures before they demolish us," said AAK President Florence Nyole. They also demand that NCA officers be held personally liable for collapses under their watch. Until impunity is punished, gravity will continue to enforce the laws of physics that corruption tried to ignore.
