Cleophas Malala has been ordered by a Political Parties Disputes Tribunal to pay KSh 150,000 in legal fees to his former party, the UDA, after losing a legal challenge to his ouster as the party’s Secretary-General.
Nairobi, Kenya – July 16, 2025
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has ruled against Cleophas Malala, deputy leader of the newly formed Democratic Change Party (DCP), ordering him to pay KSh 150,000 in legal costs to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) following a failed legal challenge to his removal as UDA’s Secretary-General.
The decision, delivered on July 15, brings an end to a high-profile political dispute that has played out against the backdrop of growing tensions within the ruling coalition. Malala had sought to contest his ouster from the influential UDA post, but the tribunal dismissed his application, affirming an earlier High Court ruling that upheld his expulsion from the party.
Malala, once a key ally within the UDA structure, has since reemerged on the national political stage as the deputy leader of the DCP, a party now associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In a statement following the ruling, Malala said he respects the tribunal’s decision and will comply with the directive to settle the legal costs.
“This chapter is closed. The future is ahead of us,” he said, signaling a shift in focus toward DCP’s strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The tribunal’s ruling sheds light on the intensifying internal rivalries and realignments within Kenyan political parties, particularly those linked to the Kenya Kwanza coalition, as various factions jostle for influence in anticipation of the next electoral cycle. Analysts note that the case reflects broader struggles over loyalty, party discipline, and leadership control, which are likely to define the country’s political landscape in the coming months.
As Malala transitions into his new role within the opposition-leaning DCP, his next moves will be closely watched, especially given his past influence and potential to rally a younger political base amid Kenya’s shifting political tides.
