GWR launches the UK’s first fast-charging battery train, a 3.5-minute charge marvel that promises to decarbonize branch lines and scrap diesel for good.

The future of British rail arrives this weekend, not with a roar of diesel, but the quiet hum of a battery. The UK’s first superfast-charging train is set to carry passengers, promising to kill the diesel engine on branch lines forever.
Great Western Railway (GWR) will deploy the converted London Underground train on the West Ealing to Greenford line. The technology is a game-changer: the train charges in just 3.5 minutes—less time than it takes to grab a coffee. It’s a "charge-and-go" system that could save the industry billions in electrification costs.
"We are proving that you don't need overhead wires to go green," says Simon Green, GWR’s engineering director. The system uses a 2,000kW charger connected to rails that only go live when the train is overhead. It’s safe, fast, and remarkably efficient. This train has already smashed world records, traveling over 80 miles on a single charge during tests.
For passengers on the Greenford branch, the 12-minute journey will now be silent and emission-free. But the implications are national. The UK has thousands of miles of non-electrified track where diesel trains still belch fumes. This technology offers a "plug-and-play" solution for these orphan lines.
With the government legally bound to net-zero targets, the pressure on rail operators is immense. This weekend’s launch is a proof-of-concept that will be watched by rail executives globally. If it works in West London, it will work in Manchester, Leeds, and beyond.
The age of the "dirty diesel" chugging through the countryside is ending. The battery era has left the station.
