Australian PM Anthony Albanese recalls Parliament for an emergency session to pass tough new hate speech and gun control laws following the Bondi Beach terror attack that killed 15.

The Australian Parliament will reconvene two weeks early in a rare emergency session to pass sweeping new laws aimed at extinguishing "factories of hate." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the recall this morning, declaring that the government must act swiftly to close the legal loopholes that allowed the Bondi Beach terror attack to happen.
The legislative package, dubbed the Combating Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill, is described as the most significant tightening of speech and association laws in decades. It comes in direct response to the December 14 atrocity where 15 people were murdered by radicalized gunmen at one of Australia’s most iconic locations.
Albanese laid out the grim reality: "The terrorists at Bondi had hatred in their minds and guns in their hands. This law will deal with both." The bill proposes extreme measures that have civil libertarians worried but the general public—still reeling from the attack—largely supportive.
Perhaps most controversially, the bill includes a National Gun Buyback Scheme, modeled on the post-Port Arthur reforms of 1996. The government aims to remove semi-automatic weapons that have seeped back into circulation through the grey market. The Opposition Coalition is under immense pressure to support this, despite resistance from their rural base.
The parliamentary session will begin with a condolence motion for the Bondi victims. "We need to grieve, but we also need to govern," Albanese said. For the survivors, the recall is a sign that their pain is moving the wheels of state. But legal experts warn that defining "hate" in law is a minefield that could inadvertently stifle legitimate political dissent.
