Australian investigators rule out foreign terror training for the father-son duo, pointing to self-radicalization rather than a coordinated global network.

The father and son accused of the horrific Bondi Hanukah massacre likely operated as a distinct "lone wolf" cell, with new intelligence ruling out external terror training in the Philippines.
This assessment by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) shifts the narrative from a coordinated global plot to the terrifying reality of self-radicalization—a security challenge that resonates deeply with intelligence agencies from Canberra to Nairobi.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett revealed on Tuesday that Sajid and Naveen Akram spent nearly a month in Davao, Philippines, in November. This trip occurred just weeks before the December 14 attack that claimed 15 lives at a Hanukah event.
However, security camera footage analyzed by investigators paints a picture of isolation rather than indoctrination. According to Philippine national police, the pair rarely left their hotel room.
While the physical evidence points to isolation, the ideological motivation remains clear. Barrett emphasized that while the AFP alleges the attack was inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS), the gunmen were likely not directed by the group's hierarchy.
"I am not suggesting that they were there for tourism," Barrett noted, hinting at a darker, perhaps psychological preparation during their seclusion.
For Kenyans familiar with the evolving tactics of groups like Al-Shabaab, the distinction is critical. The shift from complex, directed attacks to "inspired" violence makes prevention significantly harder for security services.
Barrett cautioned that this is a "point in time assessment." As investigations continue, the findings serve as a grim reminder: in the digital age, terror requires no physical headquarters, only a connection to the internet and a willingness to act.
