BAT Kenya resumes sale of velo nicotine pouches after clarity
Following an intense period of regulatory uncertainty and public health debates, British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya has officially resumed the nationwide sale of its oral nicotine product, Velo.
The corporate tug-of-war over nicotine alternatives in Kenya has taken a decisive turn. After prolonged regulatory impasses and fierce lobbying, BAT Kenya has cleared the government hurdles necessary to reintroduce its controversial Velo nicotine pouches back into the retail market.
The return of Velo marks a critical victory for the tobacco giant’s "harm reduction" portfolio, yet it simultaneously reignites a fierce national debate regarding youth addiction, public health regulation, and corporate influence within the Ministry of Health.
Initially banned in 2020 under its former moniker 'Lyft' due to aggressive marketing that appealed heavily to minors, the product underwent rigorous re-classification. Following extensive negotiations, BAT secured the requisite regulatory stamps from both the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), allowing them to navigate the strictures of the Tobacco Control Act.
BAT maintains that Velo, being tobacco-free, serves as a vital tool for transitioning adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes. However, health advocates, citing the highly addictive nature of the synthetic nicotine, warn that the pouches are fostering a new demographic of young, urban addicts.
As BAT ramps up nationwide distribution, the onus now shifts to government regulators to enforce stringent age-gating and graphic health warnings. The balance between corporate revenue and public health has never been more delicate.
"The market is open, but the ethical questions regarding the next generation's health remain dangerously unanswered," health economists caution.
