In the melting ice of Canada's Hudson Bay, a rare act of maternal care by a polar bear offers a poignant lesson on resilience as Kenya confronts its own climate-driven crises.

In the vast, frozen expanse of Canada’s Hudson Bay, a mother polar bear has done something remarkable, offering a rare glimpse into the powerful instinct for survival.
But this is not just a distant wildlife story. The same climate change threatening this bear’s icy world is accelerating drought in Turkana and melting the last glaciers on Mt. Kenya. It connects the fate of the Arctic predator to the daily struggle for water and food security faced by millions of Kenyans.
Scientists tracking a female bear known as X33991 were stunned to find her caring for two cubs this past autumn, after she was documented with only one in the spring. The event marks just the 13th documented case of adoption in the Western Hudson Bay polar bear population in nearly half a century of research involving over 4,600 bears.
“Female polar bears are really good moms and so they’re just primed for looking after and caring for their offspring,” noted Evan Richardson, a research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Alysa McCall of the non-profit Polar Bears International called the sight “amazing,” emphasizing how unusual the behaviour is.
While the adoption gives the orphaned cub a much greater chance of survival, it unfolds against a grim backdrop. The Western Hudson Bay polar bear population is one of the most vulnerable to climate change, as melting sea ice drastically shortens their seal-hunting season. Research shows the ice-free period in the region is now three to four weeks longer than it was in the 1980s, forcing the bears to fast for longer periods on land.
This environmental stress has a direct impact on their survival:
While Kenyans will never see a polar bear in the wild, the forces reshaping its habitat are intimately familiar. The rapid warming of the Arctic destabilizes global weather patterns, contributing to more extreme and unpredictable conditions here at home.
In Turkana County, rising temperatures and erratic rainfall have intensified droughts, leading to loss of livestock, scarce water, and increased conflict over resources. The story of bear X33991’s resilience is mirrored in the daily struggle of pastoralist communities adapting to a harsher reality. The melting of the Arctic is no longer a remote phenomenon; its consequences are felt in the rising sea levels along Kenya's coast and the vanishing glaciers atop Mount Kenya.
The future of bear X33991 and her newly expanded family remains uncertain. Her story is a poignant reminder that in our interconnected world, the melting of distant ice is a tide that rises on every shore, including Kenya's.
