The Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) is the wholly state-owned utility enterprise responsible for the transmission and distribution of electrical power across the Zanzibar archipelago, encompassing both Unguja and Pemba islands. As the sole power distributor, ZECO is the absolute backbone of Zanzibar’s economy, powering its massive hospitality sector, historical Stone Town, and local communities. Because the islands do not generate their own large-scale power, ZECO’s most critical infrastructure is the management of the massive, high-voltage submarine submarine cables that connect Zanzibar directly to the TANESCO national grid on the Tanzanian mainland. ZECO manages the receiving substations and steps down the power for safe, reliable distribution across the islands. To improve efficiency and combat power theft, ZECO has aggressively implemented prepaid digital metering (LUKU) systems across all commercial and residential properties. They have also partnered with local FinTech and mobile money providers to ensure Zanzibaris can effortlessly purchase electricity tokens 24/7, vastly improving revenue collection for the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
