UmojaSwitch Company Limited is a pioneering financial technology consortium established to provide a shared electronic payment infrastructure for Tanzanian commercial banks. Initially formed by a coalition of medium-sized banks, UmojaSwitch has grown into a massive national electronic switch, connecting over 25 financial institutions and microfinance banks to a single, highly secure interoperable network. The core product of the company is the Umoja ATM network. By pooling their resources, participating banks can offer their customers access to hundreds of ATMs nationwide without the massive capital expenditure of deploying their own machines. An Umoja cardholder can seamlessly withdraw cash, check balances, and pay bills at any ATM displaying the blue and yellow Umoja logo. In recent years, UmojaSwitch has heavily modernized its backend infrastructure to support mobile banking integration, agency banking (Wakala) interoperability, and real-time electronic fund transfers.
