The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is the state-owned enterprise responsible for the massive national railway network, serving as the central nervous system for Tanzania’s freight and passenger transport. TRC manages both the historic meter-gauge Central Line, which connects the port of Dar es Salaam to the vast interior regions of Kigoma and Mwanza, and the groundbreaking new railway infrastructure. TRC is currently executing one of the most ambitious engineering mega-projects in African history: the construction and operation of the electrified Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). The SGR is designed to deploy high-speed electric trains, drastically reducing transit times for passengers between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, while massively increasing the tonnage capacity for heavy freight moving inland toward the Great Lakes region. By shifting massive cargo volumes from roads to rail, TRC is heavily extending the lifespan of Tanzania’s highway network and significantly reducing national transport carbon emissions. The corporation’s modernization efforts are fundamentally transforming the logistics of East African cross-border trade, offering landlocked countries unparalleled access to the Indian Ocean.
