The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is a bi-national railway linking the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam with the landlocked town of Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia’s Copperbelt. Historically constructed with massive assistance from the People’s Republic of China in the 1970s, the 1,860-kilometer railway remains a symbol of Pan-African solidarity and international cooperation. TAZARA functions as a critical logistical artery for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The railway transports massive volumes of bulk freight, most notably exporting Zambian and Congolese copper through the Dar es Salaam port, while importing fertilizers, petroleum products, and heavy machinery into the interior of the continent, heavily reducing road degradation. In addition to freight, TAZARA operates the famous Mukuba and Kilimanjaro passenger trains. These services provide affordable, long-distance travel for millions of citizens, traversing some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Africa, including passing directly through the vast, wildlife-rich Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania.
