The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) is a monumental state-owned enterprise responsible for managing and operating all ocean and inland waterway ports in Tanzania. The crown jewel of their operations is the Port of Dar es Salaam, which acts as the principal maritime gateway not only for Tanzania but also for landlocked neighboring countries including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, and the DRC. TPA oversees massive logistical operations, handling millions of tons of cargo annually ranging from containerized goods and heavy machinery to bulk liquids and agricultural exports. The authority has heavily modernized its infrastructure in recent years, implementing the Tanzania Customs Integrated System (TANCIS) and expanding deep-water berths to accommodate larger, post-Panamax commercial vessels, dramatically reducing cargo dwell times. In addition to the Dar es Salaam hub, TPA manages strategic coastal ports in Tanga and Mtwara, as well as vital inland lake ports on Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Nyasa. By facilitating seamless import and export logistics, TPA is arguably one of the most critical engines driving East African international trade and economic development.
