The Nyanza Cooperative Union (NCU) is a massive, historically significant agricultural cooperative based in Mwanza, operating as the undisputed heart of Tanzania’s cotton industry. Representing hundreds of primary cooperative societies across the Lake Victoria zone, NCU aggregates, processes, and markets the cotton produced by hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers. NCU operates several large-scale cotton ginneries scattered across the Mwanza and Shinyanga regions. During the harvest season, these massive industrial complexes work around the clock, separating raw cotton seeds from the precious lint. The processed cotton lint is then heavily exported to global textile markets or sold to domestic spinning mills, generating vital foreign exchange for the national economy. Beyond cotton processing, NCU plays a deeply protective role for its farmers. The cooperative negotiates bulk purchasing for agricultural inputs like pesticides and high-yield seeds, secures favorable minimum purchasing prices, and provides crucial technical extension services to ensure sustainable, pest-resistant farming practices along the shores of Lake Victoria.
