The Kilombero Valley Teak Company (KVTC) is a massive, highly sustainable agro-forestry enterprise located in the Ulanga and Kilombero districts of Tanzania’s Morogoro region. Established in 1992 through a partnership involving the CDC Group and the Finnish development finance institution (Finnfund), KVTC operates the largest privately-owned teak plantation in Africa, spanning over 28,000 hectares of meticulously managed land. KVTC is a fully integrated forestry and timber manufacturing company. They operate a highly advanced, state-of-the-art sawmill and wood processing complex on-site, converting mature, sustainably harvested teak into high-value sawn timber, decking, veneer, and utility poles. These premium wood products are heavily exported to global markets across Asia, Europe, and North America, generating massive foreign exchange for Tanzania. Beyond commercial forestry, KVTC is deeply committed to environmental and social stewardship. Over a third of their landholding is designated exclusively for native biodiversity conservation. Furthermore, the company serves as the economic lifeblood of the Ulanga district, directly employing hundreds of rural workers, aggressively funding local schools and health clinics, and operating an out-grower scheme that empowers local villagers to grow their own commercial timber.
