Stewart Mwachiru Shadrack Madzayo (born June 16, 1958) is a prominent Kenyan politician and legal professional, currently serving as the Senator for Kilifi County. A career jurist and long-serving legislator, he has played a significant role in Kenyan national politics and the judiciary, particularly within the Coast region. Born in Chonyi, Bahari Constituency, in Kilifi County, Madzayo’s early educational foundation was established at Mvita Primary School, where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1973. He subsequently attended Mombasa Baptist High School, completing his secondary education in 1977. Demonstrating an early commitment to higher learning, Madzayo traveled to India in 1978. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Jabalpur University in 1981 and later earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Bombay in 1984. Upon returning to Kenya, he enrolled at the Kenya School of Law, where he secured a Post-Graduate Diploma in Law in 1988, paving the way for his admission as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Madzayo’s professional career began in private legal practice, where he worked from 1988 to 1996. During this period, he specialized in civil, commercial, and labor law, gaining a reputation for his analytical rigor. In 1996, he transitioned to the public sector, joining the Industrial Court of Kenya as a judge. His tenure on the bench, which lasted until 2012, was marked by his focus on labor and employment disputes. This extensive judicial experience—spanning over 15 years—would later become a cornerstone of his political career, providing him with a nuanced understanding of legislative drafting and constitutional matters. Madzayo’s foray into partisan politics began in 2002 when he unsuccessfully contested the Bahari parliamentary seat on a Ford People ticket. Despite this early setback, he remained active in public service and community engagement within Kilifi County. His political breakthrough arrived in 2013, when he was elected as the Senator for Kilifi County under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). This victory marked the beginning of a sustained period of influence in the upper house of the Kenyan Parliament. He was re-elected in 2017 and again in 2022, solidifying his status as a key political figure in the region. Throughout his tenure in the Senate, Madzayo has held several leadership positions. He has served as the Senate Minority Leader, a role in which he coordinates the opposition’s legislative agenda and represents the interests of minority party members in parliamentary proceedings. His committee work has been extensive, including service on the Senate Business Committee, the Health Committee, and the Labour and Social Welfare Committee. In 2022, he participated in the contest for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Senate, though he ultimately withdrew his candidature following consultations with his party leadership.
