Augustine Kamande, popularly known as “Mwafrika”, is a Kenyan politician and the Member of Parliament for Roysambu Constituency in Nairobi City County. He was elected to the National Assembly in August 2022 on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, defeating the incumbent and taking over representation of one of Nairobi’s fastest-growing urban constituencies. Prior to his election to Parliament, he had already built a profile as a vocal grassroots leader and ward representative (MCA), giving him visibility in Zimmerman–Kahawa–Githurai politics well before 2022. Away from the campaign trail, Kamande’s biography is marked by a policing and security background and later work in sales, small business and community mobilisation. Public records and civic profiles indicate that he served as an officer in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kenyan police, before moving into the private sector as a salesman and later into full-time politics. Since entering Parliament, he has framed his agenda around making Roysambu a “self-sufficient urban constituency,” with visible emphasis on roads, basic infrastructure, school facilities and safety, while maintaining an accessible “man of the people” public persona through social media and local events.
Elected MP for Roysambu (2022–present): Won the Roysambu parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election on a UDA ticket, securing 45,221 votes and unseating incumbent Isaac Waihenya.
Transition from MCA to national legislator: Rose from being a vocal Member of County Assembly (MCA) to representing the entire constituency in the National Assembly, underlining his political climb within Nairobi county politics.
Factional politics in Roysambu: Local political reporting and social-media commentary indicate phases of tension where MCAs and former allies have shifted allegiance to rival aspirants, fuelling narratives of internal rivalry and questions about his grip on the Roysambu ground
Performance and development debates: Platforms tracking constituency projects list ongoing needs around roads, drainage and “dilapidated roads” in Roysambu, with some citizens using these forums to challenge the pace and scale of his development delivery.
Security and policing expectations: Given his CID background and vocal commentary on law-and-order issues, he attracts strong expectations on security. During episodes of crime or unrest in Zimmerman–Githurai, critics sometimes question whether enough has been done, even as he publicly pushes for more police resources and new stations (e.g. Kamuthi Police Station).
Visible constituency development focus: Public updates and local coverage highlight projects such as delivery of 235 desks to Githurai Secondary School and classroom construction at local schools, part of his emphasis on education infrastructure using NG-CDF and partnerships.
Recognised local influence: Polling snapshots and civic commentaries have at times placed him as a leading or “most impactful” local leader in Roysambu, reflecting name recognition and perceived development record among sections of the electorate.
No major personal legal scandals publicly documented: As of the latest available reporting, there are no credible public records of criminal charges or court convictions against him; scrutiny centres primarily on political performance, intra-constituency rivalries and service-delivery perceptions rather than proven personal misconduct.
