Ledama Olekina is a Kenyan politician who serves as the Senator for Narok County. He has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics since his election to the Senate in 2017 and is recognized for his vocal advocacy regarding land rights, conservation, and the socio-economic development of his constituents in Narok. Born on November 11, 1974, in Oloombokishi, a village near Narok, Kenya, Olekina is the son of Meiteganyu OleNchoshoi and Siminta Enole Torome. He was raised in the Maasai community, spending much of his youth assisting his family with livestock. He received his early education at Olesankale Primary School and subsequently attended Narok High School, where he completed his secondary education in 1993. Following high school, Olekina gained early professional experience in media, working as an assistant producer for the *African Journal* program at Reuters in Nairobi. He later relocated to the United States to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and English Communication from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, in 2002. During his time in the United States, he also attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Throughout his academic years, Olekina worked to fund his education, including periods spent in London where he worked as a researcher for media organizations such as Diverse Productions and European Business News. In 1999, Olekina founded the Maasai Education Discovery (MED), a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for girls in Kenya. Through this initiative, he has provided scholarships and educational resources, including computers and library facilities, to students in rural Narok. His commitment to education and development became a cornerstone of his public profile long before his entry into formal electoral politics. Olekina’s political career began in earnest when he ran for the Narok Senate seat in the 2017 Kenyan general election. He secured victory on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, becoming the Senator for Narok County. He was subsequently re-elected in the 2022 general elections, continuing his tenure in the upper house. As a Senator, he has served on various committees, including those focused on Senate business, energy, and health. He is known for his assertive legislative style and his focus on national and county governance issues, often engaging in debates regarding revenue allocation to counties, the accountability of governors, and environmental conservation, particularly regarding the Mau Forest complex. Olekina remains a significant political figure within the ODM and the broader Azimio La Umoja coalition.
