Daniel Kitonga Maanzo (born December 12, 1971) is a prominent Kenyan politician, advocate, and public servant currently serving as the Senator for Makueni County. A member of the Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K), which is affiliated with the Azimio La Umoja coalition, Maanzo has established a significant political career characterized by his legal expertise, legislative contributions, and longstanding representation of the Makueni region. Born in Yekanga village, Makueni County, Maanzo’s early life was rooted in the socio-economic context of southeastern Kenya. He attended Kanthuni Primary School, where he completed his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE). He subsequently attended the prestigious Starehe Boys’ Centre & School for his secondary education, completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1992. Demonstrating a strong academic aptitude, he proceeded to the University of Nairobi in 1993, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, graduating in 1998. The following year, he enrolled at the Kenya School of Law, earning a Diploma in Law, which qualified him as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Maanzo’s professional life began in the legal sector. Between 1998 and 1999, he undertook pupilage at Pheroze Nowrojee & Company Advocates, where he gained practical experience in litigation and legal advisory services. He continued to work with the firm as an associate advocate until 2003. Concurrently, he engaged in academia, serving as a lecturer at the Kenya Polytechnic (now the Technical University of Kenya) from 2001 to 2003, where he taught law and mentored students. In 2007, he founded Maanzo & Company Advocates, where he has served as a senior partner, providing legal consultancy and representation in a broad range of matters. His transition into public administration began in the late 2000s. He served as a Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from 2008 to 2009, and subsequently as a Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperatives Development and Marketing from 2009 to 2012. These roles provided him with essential experience in policy coordination and government operations before his entry into elective politics. Maanzo’s legislative career began in 2013 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Makueni Constituency. He successfully defended his seat in the 2017 general election, serving in the National Assembly for two consecutive terms until 2022. During his time in the National Assembly, he was an active legislator, participating in various parliamentary committees, including those focused on agriculture, trade, industry, and delegated legislation. In the 2022 general elections, Maanzo transitioned to the Senate, winning the seat for Makueni County. As Senator, he continues to advocate for devolution, constitutional oversight, and the interests of his constituents. He serves on multiple Senate committees, leveraging his legal background to contribute to legislative debates and public accountability. Throughout his tenure, Maanzo has been recognized for his consistent focus on legal reforms and the socio-economic development of the Makueni region.
