When millions of people simultaneously decide to travel upcountry for Christmas, weddings, and funerals, the demand for transport massively outstrips the supply of public service vehicles (PSVs), giving operators the power to name their price.

The Calculation Behind the Chaos

Under normal circumstances, matatu fares are a fluid calculation based on distance, fuel costs, and road conditions. However, the December holiday season introduces a potent mix of new variables that send prices soaring.
