The Kenya Meteorological Department warned of a three-day bout of strong winds and high waves affecting coastal and southeastern regions from May 23–25, cautioning residents about possible damages to roofs and disruptions to sea travel.
Nairobi, Kenya – May 23 — The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a 72-hour weather advisory warning of intense southerly winds and high ocean waves expected to batter the coast and southeastern parts of the country through May 25.
According to the alert, wind speeds are forecast to reach up to 35 knots (approximately 65 km/h), accompanied by waves exceeding two meters in height. The weather system is projected to affect coastal counties—including Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Lamu—as well as parts of the southeastern lowlands and northwestern Kenya.
“These conditions may result in damage to lightweight structures, disrupt power supply, and pose serious risks to marine operations,” said a statement from the Meteorological Department.
Authorities have urged heightened caution, particularly for coastal residents and maritime communities. Fishermen and boat operators have been strongly advised to avoid sea travel during this period, while residents in vulnerable areas are encouraged to reinforce their homes and remain alert for emergency updates.
Local disaster response teams are reportedly on standby, and the Kenya Coast Guard has been briefed to monitor marine safety during the adverse weather spell.
The Meteorological Department expects the system to weaken by May 26, with weather conditions gradually stabilizing over the weekend.
