The honeymoon is officially over. With exactly 600 days left until the August 2027 General Election, the political class has shifted from governance to survival mode. Kenya’s major parties are in a frenzy of realignment, cleaning house and sharpening daggers for the battle ahead.

It is a high-stakes game of musical chairs. The ruling UDA is fighting internal fires, struggling to maintain the monolithic "Yellow Wave" that swept the Rift Valley and Mt. Kenya in 2022. Meanwhile, the opposition, fragmented and cash-strapped, is desperately trying to glue together a vehicle capable of unseating an incumbent President—a feat achieved only once in Kenya’s history.

"Baking a Bigger Cake" or Eating the Ingredients?

President Ruto’s strategists are already mapping out a "bigger cake" narrative, aiming to woo new voting blocs to offset potential losses in his traditional strongholds. The strategy involves aggressive recruitment drives and the dangling of development carrots. But critics argue the "cake" is shrinking, citing the high cost of living and tax burdens that have left the Wanjiku voter disillusioned.

On the other side, the "Handshake" ghosts linger. ODM is grappling with succession politics, with younger leaders like Winnie Odinga demanding a seat at the table, challenging the old guard who believe they own the party’s soul.

• The Gen Z Factor: This will be the first election defined by the post-2000 generation. They are loud, online, and largely detribalized. Traditional ethnic math may not solve the 2027 equation.
• Merger Mania: Expect a season of "folding." Small parties are being coerced or cajoled into dissolving into larger coalitions. The era of the "briefcase party" is facing an existential threat from the Political Parties Act.
