Nairobi, Kenya – May 26 — Kenyan distance running legend Vivian Cheruiyot returned to the global stage in emphatic fashion, claiming a commanding victory in the women’s 10,000 meters at the Rabat Diamond League meet on May 25. Battling through challenging wet weather conditions in Morocco, Cheruiyot delivered a trademark surge in the final laps to clinch gold and set a new Kenyan women’s season best in the event.
The performance marked a powerful finish to her 2024 Diamond League campaign and reaffirmed her status as one of Kenya’s most decorated athletes. Cheruiyot, a former Olympic champion and multiple-time world titleholder, showed no signs of slowing down as she crossed the finish line to rapturous applause from the Moroccan crowd.
Fellow Kenyan and Olympic bronze medalist Agnes Tirop Chebet also put in a solid run, finishing just behind Cheruiyot in a race that underscored the dominance and depth of Kenya’s women’s distance squad.
Speaking after her win, Cheruiyot credited her enduring form to the disciplined training under her long-time coach Joseph Nzau and a demanding altitude training regimen in Kaptagat. “It’s been a season of focus and resilience. I’m grateful to my team and coach for believing in me,” she said.
Athletics Kenya President Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei hailed the win as a significant boost ahead of the Olympic qualification season. “Vivian’s performance is a reflection of her enduring excellence and the strength of our national athletics program,” he said. “Her success sets a strong tone for Team Kenya heading into Paris 2024 qualifiers.”
Kenya enjoyed a successful outing in Rabat, securing multiple podium finishes across long-distance events. With Olympic qualifiers on the horizon and a packed summer schedule ahead, Cheruiyot’s resounding victory has not only lifted national spirits but has also reignited hope for another historic showing at the global stage.
